[MHN Jeon Eunsil / translated by Roh Pooleun] Netflix introduced K-dramas that are popular in India. On the 10th, local time, Indian media outlet Live Mint introducted K-contents that are gaining huge popularity throughout India.
According to Live Mint, the interest toward Korean contents has increased in India which has a strong cultural infrastructure inside the country, beyond Japan and Southeast Aisa which have been interested in K-wave since early on, and the global OTT such as Netflix is creating positive effects.
The most popular Korean content on Netflix in India this year was Netflix's original series 'Kingdom' which caused the zombie craze in the nation by releasing season 2 earlier this year. Shortly after its local release in March, it landed on Netflix India's 'Today's Top 10', along with K-dramas such as 'It's Okay Not to Be Okay' and 'Crash Landing on You'.
The media outlet analyzed that the reason of popularity of Korean content lies on movement restriction due to COVID-19 pandemic, regarding the great attention Korean contents are receiving in India. It also cited that cultural similarities between the two countries, where traditional family-based values and new styles coexist. It also reported that the millennial generation of India is particularly positive about Korean contents.
Meanwhile, Korean contetns that are revealed to 190 countries around the world through Netflix are leading the new K-wave not only in India. Japanese's leading media outlet, Asahi, reported that the recent popularity of Korean contents has led to signs of the 'fourth K-wave' in Japan. It added that Netflix's Korean content 'Crash Landing on You' which began distributing in February, ranks among the top 10 content in Japan, along with 'It's Okay Not to Be Okay'.
