[MHN Jung Halim] The new single by BTS, 'Dynamite', is now ranked at 2nd in its 3rd week on the Billboard main singles chart, continuing its streak of fame.
On September 14th, Billboard announced on an article that 'Dynamite' had now ranked 2nd on their main singles chart 'Hot 100' for the third week of its release.
'Dynamite' is a digital single from BTS, revealed back in August 21st, and had ranked 1st in the Billboard 'Hot 100' for the two weeks since its release.
This was the first time a song by a Korean artist hit No. 1 on the 'Hot 100', and there are only 20 songs in the history of Billboard that have kept that place for two weeks straight.
The fact that 'Dynamite' has only fallen to 2nd place in its 3rd week shows that the single is continuing to be popular in the US.
The 'Hot 100' is a chart that calcuates the most popular songs in the US every week through data such as stream counts, physical sales, amount of radio broadcasts, and more.
It stands with the 'Billboard 200' which calculates album popularity, as one of Billboard's two main charts, but the 'Hot 100' is much more in touch with mainstream fame, with intense competition to go along with it.
According to Billboard, 'Dynamite' had around 13.3 million streams on its 3rd week, a decrease by 24% from its previous week.
Download count also decreased by 25%, but still had around 136 thousand. Billboard revealed that the last single that went beyond that number was 'Closer' by the Chainsmokers and Halsey back in 2016.
BTS have also stayed at first on Billboard's 'Digital Song Sales' chart.
The fact that BTS songs are starting to be played on the radio more frequently, where most Americans become familiar with music, is also stated as one of the reasons why BTS have kept their place in the rankings.
'Dynamite' was said to be listened by 18.3 million radio listeners, an increase by 14% compared to the previous week.
This weeks 'Hot 100' had 'WAP' by Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion at No. 1. The top 10 were announced first, with the total rankings being revealed on September 15th.
The current popularity of BTS could be compared by their previous 'Hot 100' records, such as the title track of their 4th album 'MAP OF THE SOUL : 7', 'ON', which first placed 4th on the 'Hot 100', 68th on the second week, then fell out of the chart afterwards.
How long a song stays on a chart could also be another signifier of a track's popularity,as it shows how comfortably placed a song is in the public conciousness of the place's mainstream culture.
'Dynamite' has also placed 2nd on the 'Billboard Global 200', a new weekly chart created by Billboard to tabulate a song's popularity in not just the US, but globally.
