[MHN Roh Pooleun] BTS member RM's remark in a recent acceptance speech for an award from the Korea Society, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, has sparked anger in China.
During the speech, RM(Kim Nam-joon) said, "We need to always remember the history of pain shared by the two nations, and sacrifies of many men and women," which raged the anger in China, because some Chinese interpreted that the 'two nations' in the remark refers to United States and South Korea, which excludes the sacrifice of Chinese soldiers.
Netizens criticizing the comment stated that the BTS member's remarks were unconsidered of historical meaning it takes. During the Korean War, which spanned from 1950 to 1953, millions of soldiers and civilians were killed, including Korean, American, and Chinese. According to Chinese state media, 180,000 Chinese soldiers were sacrified during the war.
In the Chinese view, the Korean War is referred to as 'Fighting the Americans and helping the North Koreans,' which is different from the views of Koreans. The outrage about RM's remarks is due to the difference in the view about the war, politically and historically, between different coutnes.
By hurting the feelings of Chinese people, suddenly, BTS had joined a long list of brands that have triggered consumer blowback in China. Concerns rose about BTS boycott as a deja vu of economic fallout from a missle-defense dispute in 2017.
The controversy comes few days before the septet's agency, Big Hit Entertainment, is set to go to public in an initial public offering.
BTS, the most popular K-pop band in the world, has shown unrivaled career. Their single, 'Dynamite,' became the most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours, with 101.1 million views in a day. In addition, the band has gathered almost million viewers during their 2-day online concert from October 10th to 11th.
