Number four is strongly based in Korea as much as number three is.
Especially in the art category, number threes and fours are always favored like 'RoZlMe' short for Ronaldo, Zlatan, Messi and 'The World's Top 4 ---' is always a title used many times.
Surprisingly, the musical scene also has its four greatest musicals. 'Phantom of the Opera', 'Miss Saigon', 'Les Miserables' and 'CATS'. This title isn't an official call but anyways, musical 'CATS' will be performing since the 9th of July until September 10th at the HaeOrum Theater Hall of the National Theater in a different version.
All of the four musicals mentioned above are grand musicals chosen from the bunch shown at mega-theaters. Just like 'Phantom of the Opera's shiny chandeliers, 'Miss Saigon's helicopter scene, and the French revolution of 'Les Miserables', 'CATS' at the HaeOrum Theater is surrounded with cat eyes and flat tires all over the stage. It doesn't stop there, but all of it jumps out to where the audience are, creating a true theater experience. It furthers its boundaries outside the grand stage.
The world of 'CATS' is bigger than its stage creation. Performed in 15 languages at 30 nations, 300 cities and with more than 73,000,000 tickets sold, this year's show in Korea will also record a 1,700,000 number of audiences. 'Memory' sung by more than 150 artists and recorded more than 180 times is just a start.
But what is mentioned is not enough to explain 'CATS'. 'CATS' is not a grand-scaled production but a small, meticulous, and beautiful story. First, 'CATS' runs against any ordinary plot. There is a flow of the story but really it's more like a collection of scattered small stories put together. The stories of the human-like cats unfold one by one, and the audience gets to accept and understand the individual meanings from each of the individual stories. If you miss this track of the show, 'CATS' will only be a famous show, nothing
There is no main female or male protagonist, nor is there any love songs for them. Except for legendary piece 'Memory', there's no reprise unlike most of what is found in a typical musical number. Just like free-spirited cats 'CATS' also just shares its stories when it wants to.
The stories and characters of the cats are what fascinates the audience. Based on the poem of T.S. Elliott, each of the stories from the musical numbers seem ordinary but then very brave depending on what the audience feels.
Rum Tum Tugger the curious cat, Mr. Mistoffelees the wizard, Mungojerrie and Rumpleteezer,Grizabella, the once beautiful but now old and weary cat, and more have their own stories and personalities. Just like every member of a boyband is someone's favorite, many of the cats from 'CATS' are favorited by someone in the audience. That's where the fun of 'CATS' begins.
Next is the charming actors who become cats for real. Watching the actors performing powerful moves for over two hours itself is a mesmerizing scene to witness. If you are a cat-lover, catching the actors moving just like cats is another trigger to excite you.
As you can tell, 'CATS' is not just a popular broadway show that's as big as its mass numbers. It's proof that personal things are universal but to some visitors who don't care much about 'empathy' this production may not be a great choice. But it's really hard to overlook at all the 24 cats.
