This timid little boy felt as if he had it all at the moment he made it as MBC's comedian.
In no doubt that the world would open its arms, but MBC's main comedy program closed due to low viewing rates; he was jobless. Living off calling his family through the public telephones because he couldn't pay his cell phone bills, he needed a new plan. Out of everything this young man Wooram Choi knew he was good at 'searching' so he went out to the streets for street interviews. That was the start of AfreecaTV's main channel, 'Choi Goon TV'.
When people ask why he chose to be a pioneer of internet broadcasting instead of keeping the stable title as an MBC comedian, Choi Goon answers, "it wasn't stable at all." MBC's best comedy show "GagYa"'s viewing rates started tumbling down around Choi Goon joined.
He came out with confidence that 'people will recognize me elsewhere too' but the reality wasn't that easy. While doing part time jobs, he got hooked when someone told him that BJs earned a lot of money. "I'm a comedian and thing's aren't working out, how can BJs be making money so much?" was how Choi Goon started his internet broadcast.
It Was Not Stable As A Comedian
Choi Goon TV's biggest asset is its outside broadcasts
From Garosugil, Hongdae and around other populated areas, he goes through street interviews. Nothing scripted. He promises to get a doll out of the doll picking machines but fails, and a random person he ran up to shows off some runway walk, later to be revealed as a real model. The live happenings have the whole chatting screen covered with 'lol's. When ChoiGoon first started internet broadcasting as a former comedian, he worried he might shame the name of comedians by being weird. But in reality, there were only 20 - 30 viewers.
But ChoiGoon did not give up. He somehow was strongly motivated to be number one. Thanks to running the show through the rain and snow, he's now the number one BJ.
'Street Interviews' That Started From Being Ghetto
AOA, Sistar, Girlsday, GongYu, Jungki Song, Boyoung Park, Seungbum Ryu, Bumsu Lee... Celebrities who are hard to even watch on televisions shared their time with ChoiGoon.
Rumors say he's got many celebrity friends, but that's just what's been said. It's the outcome of sending rejected meeting proposals over and over again. A new girl group was on his show once, which opened up as a door for celebrities to follow an AfreecaTV experience. 'ChoiGoonTV' got famous once rumors of, 'If you get on his show, getting hot searched is guaranteed' widely spread.
Consciously Searching Others was What Raised Me
His mother worked as a cleaning lady and many times ChoiGoon had to live with a friend or relatives' house. He felt guilty to even use warm water in winter so he showered in cold water. Consciously searching other people actually was his strength. When interviewing, even by looking at their faces, he says he can tell what they mean. He says it's better to start talking with the boyfriend when encountering a couple. It seems like he just does it, but with all his might he's consciously aware of what the other person is doing. ChoiGoonTV's success was because of his calculated plannings.
Sharp Orderings Behind His Cuddly Face
He covers himself as a cuddly faced character but OB(Outdoor Broadcasts), CB(Collaboration Broadcast) all have been started by him and now he's busy creating a new content. He's been supporting new BJs as a win-win. MWSB(The Man Who Supports BJs), KFI(Keeping Female Instagrams) are programs where he builds a connection with other BJs and leads as a veteran BJ.
The Only Broadcast That's Available Borderless is 'Internet Broadcast'
The internet broadcast industry is growing on and on. ChoiGoon thinks it will expand as a Korean wave even over to China. Just like ChoiGoonTV was a bridge for celebrities, who knows it could be a bridge to share Korean cultures to Chinese people? ChoiGoon is now learning Chinese very hard.
At the Afreeca broadcast awards, 'ChoiGoonTV' won consecutively over 2011, 2012, and 2013. That's how long many people have been enjoying his show. ChoiGoon hopes for a day to come when asking "Did you watch ChoiGoonTV?" than "Did you watch GagConcert?" will become common. Whether it's a good day, or a bad day, or a so-so day... Dreaming for a communicating broadcast ChoiGoon is out on the streets today, to meet people and do some doll-picking as well.
